Abstract:

Binder of materials on fire engine trucks the company produced for various towns, government agencies, and universities throughout California. Binder contains black and white lithographic prints of fire trucks with specifications on the back of each one. The binder was sent to the Chief of the Coordination Unit of the Office of Civilian Defense (Fire Defense Section), Roi B. Woolley, after a vist to California. Also includes correspondence between the owner of the company, P.E. Van Pelt, and Woolley regarding of the company's available inventory on hand that could be used to build fire trucks for the government. Correspondence to Woolley bears an Office of Civilian Defense stamp containing the received date.

P.E. Van Pelt was a builder of fire trucks, fire apparatus and equipment based in Oakdale, Calif., 1925-1987. It was the west coast fire apparatus builder that was in business the longest and became the largest builder of fire apparatus west of the Rocky Mountains. Van Pelt built all types of fire fighting equipment including pumpers, water tenders (tankers), aerials, elevating platforms, brush engines, and more.
